School Transformation in Rathnapuri

In 2019, The Liana Trust adopted two schools in Rathnapuri village and embarked on a transformational journey. Our team collaborates with school authorities and a host of experts to conduct monthly workshops on themes ranging from renewable energy to the magic of math. Each of these workshops has a strong focus on Nature, while supporting the students’ existing curricula. In creating nature journals, students learnt about their immediate environment. By writing storybooks, they improved their literature and grammar skills. And in organising science fairs for their community, they explore concepts in physics and chemistry.

We empower students by expanding their horizons, and encouraging them to direct their own educational journeys. A “request box” placed in each school invites students to anonymously share not just what they would like to learn about, but what they want from their school.

The Liana Trust has established a dedicated library in each of the two schools, providing around 3000 storybooks across genres, languages and reading levels. The Trust also offers infrastructural support when possible, and has funded the building of the library rooms, biogas units, playgrounds, and the purchase of furniture.

Following the successful interventions at these two schools, The Liana Trust is now working to adopt a third low-income private school into the school transformation program.
